Useful Ways to Help People Remember Your Ads
July 1, 2008
How will you know that your advertisements are working? For me, it is when you start hearing people talking about your ads. It is when your materials are being used as examples at blog posts or having their own threads at different forums sites. But to achieve such, you have to make the kind of ads that will have an impact, the ads that will easily be recalled by those who have seen them.
Are those goals hard to achieve? Maybe. But it can be achieved because we have all seen so many ads that have been done and created a lot of recall through the years. Some businesses even opted in creating controversy with their ads. They have resorted to some dirty tactics or however you may want to look at it. But the more people are reacting to those ads, some even started protests and rallies for such ads to be taken down, the more attention is being drawn to the source of all the hype.
As a consumer, I have also browsed through the controversial ads in the past. I have taken interest in seeing what some of those looked like. Or I just wanted to find out what the fuss is all about. But if you are not the type of business person who is likely to take that route, you can still play it safe while achieving great results.
I stumbled upon an interesting article at Entrepreneur.com. The piece was focused on how to create total recall with your ads. And the advices were supported with studies. It was written in 2003 but I think that the advices are still applicable up to now. Here are some of the important points that I have gathered in the material.
1. Your ads must be engaging. People must spend more time or they must linger on your materials for them to remember its essence and, of course, your message. It cited a study done by the Starch Communications with the Newspaper Association of America. It found out that when illustrations filled the three-quarters of your ad space, the recognition rates go up by 50 percent.
2. Experiment with colors. Add some and create a contrast. The study done by Starch Communications tested two identical ads of vodka, except for their backgrounds. The one had a white background and the other one had a black background. The result was that more people remembered the latter ad.
3. You must run your ads frequently. You will not succeed by simply putting up a billboard for a month then expect that people will remember such for quite a time. As much as possible, you must run the ads longer and have different formats for a certain ad. If you already have a billboard, you can invest some more with postcards, brochures, flyers and the likes to have more people drawn to your message.
And this is, I think, is the most vital in all ads, whether it’s done in print or the broadcast medium.
4. Tell people how they will benefit from your campaign. You must address that question first and foremost so that people will recognize what they will gain from your promo. This way, they will likely hold on to your ads and even tell other people about it.
5. And to add to the abovementioned, you have to make good offers. Remember that you are always in a stiff competition. You don’t want to look the mediocre one as compared to your competitors. And aside from that, when you make an offer, make sure that your target market can easily avail that. Your phone lines must be accessible for inquiries and your staff must be totally aware of the gimmick in order for them to provide good service to the interested parties.
Now that we’ve all got some ideas on how to create ads with an impact, everything seems easier and doable. Remember these tips when you next avail printing services from Large Format Posters. And you’ll surely be on your track to your consumers’ minds.
