Money can come without you leaving home
January 8, 2009
Making money is not exclusive to being employed and to very serious entrepreneurs.
Yeah, money doesn’t come easy these days but that doesn’t mean that people have stopped needing services and products. You can enjoy a wedge of the profits generated from providing such commodities. And the best part is that don’t even have to go head-to-head with big companies. You can start small — right within the comforts of your own home.
Earning outside the office
Home-based businesses were often overlooked, especially by those whose salaries were more than enough to provide well for a family. But now that the economy is down, people are discovering how operating simple income-generating activities from home can help buffer their daily expenses. These small enterprises can range from simple to comprehensive so you can choose to keep your job to maintain a fixed salary, or you can drop that and work on this full-time.
Another interesting characteristic of home-based businesses, or at least most of them, is that they have minimal demands in terms of startup and running costs. For one, you can engage in a business that requires only your energy such as pet care. Those that require equipment can be carried out using what you already have at home, similar or improvised. This includes cooking and freelance web designs, to name a few.
Selecting an enterprise
Probably the best customers to target are the people within your neighborhood or district, with the exception of dot-com ventures, of course. By doing so, you can trim down on transportation and advertising costs, and enjoy bigger profit returns. If you do end up choosing a business that exclusively accommodates people nearby, make sure that the business you choose is something that would generally cater to their needs.
You can offer your specialized skills like editing and proofreading, photography tutorials, graphic designing, dog care, creating pet accessories, refurbishing old furniture, and making crafts for gifts and souvenirs.
You may also be a consultant, depending on your level of expertise on a specific field. Or you can offer a more comprehensive service like designing healthy and complete meal plans, preparing them and delivering them to your health buff and health enthusiast clients.
Research and pilot test
Another advantage of small businesses is that research and pilot testing are easy. Make sure the product or service prototype that you will test already closely resembles what people should expect from it and has passed your quality standards. Otherwise, you’ll tarnish its reputation even before you start earning from it.
Start small but look big
Note that just because it’s home-based doesn’t mean you have to make it look small-time. Package your brand into something that would attract buyers. If your business is a serious one, give a professional sound to it. If it’s supposed to be fun and upbeat, make your brand look like its got sugar, spice and everything nice.
Naturally, you also need to advertise. Depending on your commodity, you can target individuals with flyers and brochures, or if you want to call the attention of the general public without needing to print and distribute hundreds of ads, use large format prints like posters, vinyl banners and window clings. You can order as little as 1 copy and get it at a low price.
As mentioned, most home-based businesses require very little capital. It’s worth a shot — especially if it means giving your pocket a little reinforcement to meet your everyday expenditures.
